Hurricanes Florence, Helene, Tropical Storm Isaac Move Up the Atlantic

MIAMI Tropical Storms Florence and Helene have become hurricanes, while Isaac continues to intensify as the weather systems make their way across the Atlantic.

Florence which is some 935 km (581 mi) northeast of the Lesser Antilles is expected to intensify into a Category 4 hurricane and reach the Carolinas between Thursday and early Friday, as per a National Hurricane Center report on Monday.

With sustained 140 mph winds, Florence is now over the Atlantic and moving west at 11 kph (6.8 mph), a trajectory it is expected to maintain through Monday, before turning west-northwest in the coming days.

Isaac, on the other hand, has gained strength over the past few hours, with 110 kph (68.4 mph) sustained winds and is expected to become a hurricane by Monday night.

Helene is now some 230 km (143 mi) southwest of the Cape Verde Islands, and is expected to turn west-northwest toward the open sea.
