MIAMI – Tropical Storms Florence and Helene have become hurricanes, while Isaac continues to intensify as the weather systems make their way across the Atlantic.
Florence – which is some 935 km (581 mi) northeast of the Lesser Antilles – is expected to intensify into a Category 4 hurricane and reach the Carolinas between Thursday and early Friday, as per a National Hurricane Center report on Monday.
With sustained 140 mph winds, Florence is now over the Atlantic and moving west at 11 kph (6.8 mph), a trajectory it is expected to maintain through Monday, before turning west-northwest in the coming days.
Isaac, on the other hand, has gained strength over the past few hours, with 110 kph (68.4 mph) sustained winds and is expected to become a hurricane by Monday night.
Helene is now some 230 km (143 mi) southwest of the Cape Verde Islands, and is expected to turn west-northwest toward the open sea.
