KABUL – The Taliban condemned on Thursday the decision by US President Donald Trump to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, saying the move would only serve to fuel global conflicts.
In a statement, the Taliban described Trump’s decision as “anti-Muslim bigotry and a reckless step.”
“This decision by Trump will fan the flames conflict in the entire world especially the Middle East,” the group warned.
“The Islamic Emirate (the Taliban’s name for itself) calls on all Muslims and Islamic countries to declare their solidarity with Baital Maqdas (Jerusalem) and back the legal resistance of the oppressed Palestinian nation,” the group added.
On Wednesday, Trump broke with international consensus on Jerusalem by recognizing it as Israel’s capital and ordered the transfer of the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to the Holy City, a step which has escalated tensions in the region and jeopardized Washington’s role as mediator in peace talks.
For the Taliban, the move shows that the US is directly involved in “all Muslim miseries that have angered Muslims for decades,” usurping their homelands, killing their people and trying to destroy Islamic values.
“Finally, America has fully exposed her colonialist face and declared enmity towards Islam as well as support for policy of occupation and colonization of Muslim lands,” the insurgents said.
The group also urged the Muslim world to unite against the attacks on Islam and said if it continued “squandering opportunities” then soon “Muslim sanctums shall further be degraded and the very existence of Muslims shall face immense danger.”
The Taliban are engaged in an open-conflict with the government in Afghanistan, where they have been gradually gaining ground.
Earlier this year, Trump announced a new strategy for the region, involving increased deployment of US troops in the country.
