GUATEMALA CITY – The pilot and all three passengers aboard a helicopter died on Tuesday when the aircraft crashed at this capital’s La Aurora International Airport, Guatemalan authorities said.
The passengers have been identified as Mexican businesspeople Julio, Ramon and Leticia Velasco, civil aviation chief Carlos Velasquez told a press conference.
The Mexicans were in Guatemala to look at investment opportunities, Velasquez said.
A former Guatemalan air force pilot, Daniel Castillo, was at the controls of the MD600 helicopter, which took off from La Aurora bound for the La Acantera Verde mine in the eastern province of Zacapa.
Officials are working to determine the cause of the crash, which took place at 12:53 pm.
Castillo did not contact the control tower to report any mechanical problems.
Incoming flights were diverted to neighboring El Salvador and the airport will remain closed as long as necessary for investigators to do their work, Velasquez said.
