Five Dead in Bolivia Bus Crash

LA PAZ – At least five people died and another 16 were injured Monday when a bus flipped over on a highway linking the central Bolivian province of Cochabamba with the eastern region of Santa Cruz, media outlets said.

The accident occurred around 6:00 a.m. near the community of Tutimayu, 24 kilometers (15 miles) from Cochabamba city.

The injured were taken to hospitals in Cochabamba and in the municipality of Sacaba.

Passenger Luis Vilca told Pio XII radio that the bus was speeding at the time of the accident.

“We passengers began to ask the driver to stop but he ignored us, and the more we pleaded with him the faster he went until the bus turned over on a curve. Aftet that I only saw blood and a lot of people crying,” Vilca, who was unhurt, said.

This was the third serious traffic accident in Bolivia in the last few days.

The first took place last Wednesday, when a bus headed to La Paz from the Chilean coastal city of Arica ran into a truck that was parked on a mountain road, leaving 15 dead.

A day later, another bus plunged into a river in La Paz province.

In that accident, at least 10 people died, six others were injued and 10 remain missing. EFE
