Death Toll from Bolivia Bus Crash Rises to 22

LA PAZ – At least 22 people were killed and 28 others were injured when a bus plunged into a ravine in central Bolivia, police said.

The transit director in the Cochabamba region, Col. Luis Herbas, told Efe the accident occurred when a bus traveling from Cochabamba city to La Paz collided with a van and then fell 70 meters (229 feet) down the ravine.

According to the police’s preliminary report, 20 of the fatalities were occupants of the bus and the other two were inside the van.

The accident occurred in the wee hours of Wednesday at a spot roughly 92 kilometers (57 miles) from Cochabamba city, near the town of Tapacari.

The injured were taken for medical care in the towns of Vinto and Quillacollo, while police and rescue workers took the bodies of the dead to the coroner’s office in Cochabamba, local media reported. EFE
