Bolivia’s Morales Camps Out Ahead of Che Guevara Memorial Ceremony

LA PAZ – Bolivia’s President Evo Morales spent the night in a tent in the southeastern town of Vallegrande on Sunday ahead of a ceremony marking the 50th anniversary of the death of Marxist rebel leader Ernesto “Che” Guevara.

Morales told reporters that the tent was provided by a commander of the Armed Forces as there was no room left in the few hotels in the small town, where thousands of the revolutionary’s followers have come to attend the commemorations scheduled for Monday.

Morales participated in a march towards the southeastern town of La Higuera on Sunday, and placed a floral wreath at the bust of the emblematic Argentine-born Cuban revolutionary, who was assassinated by Bolivian forces in La Higuera on Oct. 9, 1967.

The Bolivian government will hold a ceremony and march in the town of Vallegrande on Monday, at which Guevara’s four children and the Cuban Vice President, Ramiro Valdes, will also be present.
