Inca, Tiwanaku Treasures Handed Over to Bolivian Government

LA PAZ – A group of Aymara Indians handed over 18 gold and silver relics of the Inca and Tiwanaku cultures to Bolivia’s Culture Ministry, an official said Tuesday.

The items were removed in 2010 from the Challa museum on Isla del Sol, located in Lake Titicaca, amid disagreements among various indigenous groups over the administration of the museum, the ministry’s head of archaeological and anthropological research, Julio Condori, told EFE.

He said that the antiquities never left the island and spent the past six years “under the custody” of several different Aymara communities, who previously returned 35 other antiquities taken from Challa.

Aymara elders presented the pieces to Culture Minister Marko Machicao and will be stored in the vaults of Bolivia’s central bank pending completion of talks on establishing a new museum on Isla del Sol, Condori said.
