LA PAZ – At least nine members of the same family died when the vehicle they were riding in went off a road and into a ravine 200 meters (650 feet) deep in Bolivia’s southwestern Potosi province.
The accident occurred on Wednesday afternoon and all those in the minibus – five men and four women ages 22-65 – died, local Erbol radio reported Thursday.
Police recovered the bodies in a three-hour operation and transported them to the town of Llallagua.
A relative of the victims attributed the crash to the poor state of the road linking Llallagua with the town of Pocoata, both in Potosi province.
Road accidents in Bolivia take an average of 1,000 lives per year and result in some 40,000 injuries, according to government figures.
