Arson Blamed for Deadly Blaze in Cuba

HAVANA – A 6-year-old girl in the central Cuban province of Villa Clara died in a fire deliberately set by her father, who is under arrest, the provincial government said Thursday.

Alexander Fleites Zamora, 39, was taken into custody on arson charges for the blaze Sunday at his family’s residence.

Setting the fire was a crime of passion, according to the official statement, which did not offer any details.

While Fleites’ daughter perished in the flames, his 4-year-old son is making a satisfactory recovery from burns received in the fire, provincial authorities said.

In a separate statement posted on the Web site of state broadcaster CMHW, the Cuban Interior Ministry acknowledged unnamed citizens who collaborated in the capture of Fleites, who has a criminal record.

Cuba’s government-controlled media rarely reports on violent crime and public statements by the police are unusual.
