LIMA – The vice president of the Peruvian region of Amazonas, Dr. Augusto Wong Lopez, was shot to death by two unknown gunmen in the jungle province of Bagua, local media reported Sunday.
The Web site elcomercio.pe reported that Wong was shot three times while he was in his medical office, where the two killers showed up pretending to have health problems.
Wong was shot in the chest, the back and the head and died an hour later in the Gustavo Lanatta Hospital in Bagua.
After staging the hit, his attackers fled, although police later arrested a man suspected of having participated in the murder.
The Web site said that Bagua authorities believe that political rivalries resulted in the attack.
