22 Die in Bus Accident in Northern Peru

LIMA At least 22 people were killed and 16 others injured when a bus plunged into a 200-meter (655-foot) ravine in a rural area in the northern region of Piura, the Peruvian highway patrol said.

The accident occurred around 4:00 p.m. Monday at kilometer 45 of the Fernando Belaunde Terry highway in Huarmaca district.

The cause of the accident has not been determined, police said.

The bus was traveling from Tarapoto, a city in the jungle region of San Martin, to Chiclayo, a province in the coastal region of Lambayeque.

The accident scene is in rough terrain, the highway patrol told the official Andina news agency. EFE
