LIMA – Four army personnel died when their vehicle ran off the road and plunged into a ravine in the southern region of Ayacucho, Peruvian media said.
A colonel, major, captain and enlisted man were killed, while their civilian driver was badly injured.
The accident took place Thursday on a road in the Oyolo district, Canal N television reported.
The soldiers were carrying out reconnaissance in several Ayacucho towns where residents are due to vote soon in a referendum on recalling local officials.
Remnants of the Shining Path guerrilla group operate in the Ayacucho region.
Authorities were working to determine the cause of the accident. EFE
