11 Dead, 41 Injured in Peru Truck Accident

LIMA At least 11 people were killed and 41 others injured when a truck crashed into a hillside in southwestern Peru, RPP radio reported.

The mayor of the town of Capillas, Rolando Campos, told the station the truck was carrying dozens of people when it slammed into the hill Friday in a rural area of the Huancavelica region.

Ten died at the scene of the accident, while the director of the San Jose de Chincha hospital, Gilda Solari, said one of the 41 people treated by her staff perished at the medical facility.

Solari said two of the injured a five-year-old child and a 35-year-old man will be transferred to other specialized hospitals after suffering spinal-cord injuries.

RPP said the driver of the vehicle, which was traveling from Chincha Alta a coastal city south of Lima to Capillas, crashed into the hillside to avoid plunging into a ravine.

Accidents are common in Peru due to a combination of poorly maintained roads, aging vehicles and rugged terrain.
