LIMA – Three men charged with drug trafficking and one accused of sexual abuse escaped over the weekend from a Peruvian jail under circumstances still under investigation, Quillabamba police chief Ronald Bayona told Efe.
The inmates escaped Sunday from San Joaquin Prison in Quillabamba, La Convencion province, in the southern region of Cuzco, operated by members of Peru’s INPE prison service.
The inmates were armed, a prison worker told Radio Programas del Peru, or RPP, on condition of anonymity.
“They took the people who were cleaning the area around the main entrance by surprise,” the prison worker said.
Apparently the guards showed signs of inebration, something the worker denied, La Convencion police chief Jesus Yañez told RPP.
Prison staff carry no weapons and only 10 members of INPE are in charge of the prison’s 150 inmates, the prison worker said.
Personnel have been deployed in the area to recapture the fugitives, Bayona told Efe. EFE
