Peruís Fujimori May Face Charges for Forced Sterilizations

LIMA Ė Peruvian women who say they were forced to undergo sterilizations during the 1990-2000 rule of Alberto Fujimori are planning to file charges against the jailed former president, lawmaker Hilaria Supa said.

Members of a group representing forced-sterilization victims in the southern region of Cuzco accompanied Supa to the prosecutorís office, where the legislator presented a dossier of more than 3,000 pages.

The file is based on an investigation launched by Peruís Health Ministry in 2002.

Eighteen women died of complications after being forced to undergo surgical sterilization, according to the National Ombudís Office, which found that most of the unwilling patients were poor women from rural areas.

More than 2,000 of the roughly 300,000 Peruvian women who underwent sterilization between 1996 and 200 as part of public health initiative claim they were forced to submit to the procedure.

Fujimori, 73, is currently serving a 25-year prison sentence for massacres and other human rights violations that took place during his tenure. EFE
