16 Die in Peru Bus Plunge

LIMA – A bus plunged into a ravine in northwestern Peru, leaving 16 dead and seven injured, highway police told local media.

The vehicle tumbled 200 meters (655 feet) down a hillside Friday near Pacaipampa, a town in the Piura region about 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) north of Lima.

Rescue teams found the bodies of 16 victims, while the seven injured passengers were rushed to a nearby hospital, police told the official Andina news agency.

Among the fatalities were a couple and their two-year-old boy and employees of the National Comptroller’s Office, El Comercio daily reported.
