LIMA – Ten people were killed and six others injured Friday when a passenger van plunged into a ravine in the northern region of La Libertad, Peruvian police told Efe.
The accident took place at around 5:00 a.m. in the remote Succha sector of Sanchez Carrion province, RPP radio said.
“Communication is difficult because there’s no access for cell phones in that zone,” a police officer in the city of Huamachuco told Efe, adding that the accident scene was about four hours away from his location.
The driver and his assistant had gotten out of the vehicle to inspect the tires when the brakes failed and the van slid off the road, falling 150 meters (492 feet) to the bottom of a ravine, RPP said.
The injured were taken to a hospital in Huamachuco and a clinic in the town of El Pallar. EFE
