LIMA – Three men carrying two hand grenades in a vehicle were arrested by the Peruvian National Police on Wednesday in a district of Callao province, outside Lima.
The men were detained by officers before dawn on Callao’s Nestor Gambetta Avenue and taken to the Criminal Investigations Directorate, or Divincri, for questioning.
Officers found two hand grenades in the car’s trunk and called bomb squad officers to remove the weapons.
The vehicle was sealed with security tape and moved to Divincri headquarters in Callao.
Police have expanded searches for explosives, targeting gangs in Lima and Callao in response to extortion cases in which grenades are used.
