LIMA – One person was killed and three others suffered smoke inhalation while trying to put out a forest fire in a remote area in the central Andes region, the Peruvian national emergency management office said.
The fire was still burning out of control on Saturday, emergency management officials said.
The fire broke out on Thursday at kilometer 348 of the Alto Chupampa highway in Salcachupan, a district in the central Andean region of Pasco.
The blaze is burning in a remote area that firefighters are having difficulty reaching.
The damage caused by the fire has not yet been determined and officials are concerned that the blaze could reach Salcachupan city.
The fatality occurred when a resident helping fight the fire was hit by falling stones.
Two firefighting teams are working to put out the blaze on different fronts, while residents are digging ditches to keep the flames from spreading.
