Soldier Dies in Firefight with Guerrillas in Peru

LIMA – One soldier was killed and another wounded in a firefight between an army patrol and guerrillas in Peru’s Valley of the Apurimac, Ene and Mantaro Rivers, or VRAEM, officials said Tuesday.

Cpl. William Salazar Pincha was killed and Cpl. Ronoel Del Aguila Avene was wounded, the Armed Forces Joint Command said.

The firefight started when a patrol from the counterinsurgency base in Paquichari was attacked while on a surveillance mission.

A second patrol provided support and transported the body of the dead soldier and his wounded companion to the military base in Pichari.

The armed forces and National Police are battling the remnants of the Shining Path guerrilla group in the VRAEM.

The rebels have joined forces with drug cartels and producers of illegal coca, the raw material for cocaine, officials say.
