LIMA – Four people, including three teenagers, were killed in an abandoned mine in northern Peru’s La Libertad region, the National Police and prosecutors said.
A man and three boys, ages 15, 16 and 17, died inside the mine in Parcoy, a district in Pataz province, when they inhaled toxic gases, officials told reporters.
The accident occurred on Friday, but the bodies were not recovered until the next day.
Prosecutor Alfonso Ascencio oversaw the bodies’ removal from the mine and ordered them taken to the morgue in the area.
Small-scale mines operate in the mountains of La Libertad and other areas of northern Peru.
Miners dig for gold, with children often employed illegally.
