12 Die in Bus Crash in Northern Peru

LIMA Ė At least 12 people were killed and 11 others injured when a bus crashed on Sunday in Ancash, a region in northern Peru, media reports said.

The accident occurred around 4:00 a.m. near Cajacay, a town in Bolognesi province.

The bus was traveling from La Union, a town in Dos de Mayo province, to Lima, the Andean nationís capital, when it went off the highway.

This is the second accident reported in Peruís interior on Sunday.

Seven National Police officers were killed and one was injured when the pick-up truck they were riding in went off a rural road and plunged into a ravine in Julcan, a province in La Libertad region, National Police Third Northern Police Region commander Gen. Cesar Gentille Vargas said.

The officers were traveling from the coastal city of Trujillo to the Andean city of Calamarca, where they were supposed to provide additional security for the regional and municipal elections taking place in Peru on Sunday.

Peru has many problems with its roads and a large number of old vehicles, and experts contend the accident rate in the Andean nationís interior is extremely high due to the poor condition of roads.
