Seven Police Officers Die in Accident in Peru

LIMA – Seven National Police officers were killed and one was injured when the pick-up truck they were riding in went off a rural road and plunged into a ravine in Julcan, a province in Peru’s La Libertad region, officials said.

The officers were traveling from the coastal city of Trujillo to the Andean city of Calamarca, where they were supposed to provide additional security for the regional and municipal elections taking place in Peru on Sunday.

The dead officers’ bodies have been recovered and the injured officer was transported to a hospital in Trujillo, which is on the north coast of Peru, National Police Third Northern Police Region commander Gen. Cesar Gentille Vargas said.

Peru has many problems with its roads and a large number of old vehicles, and experts contend the accident rate in the Andean nation’s interior is extremely high due to the poor condition of roads.
