LIMA – Argentina’s Pluspetrol has been fined 20 million soles (some $7.19 million) for polluting and destroying a pond in Peru’s northeastern Amazon region, authorities told Efe.
The fine was imposed on Nov. 22 by Peru’s OEFA environmental protection agency, which said Pluspetrol polluted the Shanshococha pond with liquid hydrocarbons and caused irreparable harm to the ecosystem.
The company was ordered to construct a new pond as a “corrective measure.”
The fine is subject to appeal.
Pluspetrol, meanwhile, said in a statement Wednesday that the pond, located in the vast and sparsely populated region of Loreto, has already been remediated and restored.
