BUENOS AIRES – The driver of a garbage truck was killed on Friday when his vehicle was struck by a crane belonging to the Argentine air force.
The 30-ton mobile crane was transporting a freight container to the Defense Ministry depot in the Port of Buenos Aires at the time of the accident. The crane’s operator was admitted to a hospital with minor injuries, the air force told EFE.
A number of passersby were taken to the hospital, but none had life-threatening injuries, the air force said.
According to media outlets, the accident was the result of a failure of the crane’s brakes.
In a statement, the military said that both the crane and its driver “were operating according to regulations, with valid insurance and licenses,” adding that the air force is cooperating with civil authorities to determine what caused the accident.
The collision took place in the Puerto Madero neighborhood, scene for the last 18 months of major construction on an underpass to connect highways north and south of Buenos Aires, and initial reports indicated that the crane was part of that project.
