Barenboim Calls on Argentina to Be More Committed Towards Syrian Refugees

BERLIN Argentine-born conductor and pianist Daniel Barenboim reiterated his call on Argentina on Thursday to increase its commitment towards the Syrian refugees, out of conviction that his country, where three million Muslims peacefully coexist, has the ability to host them.

At the opening of a seminar on tolerance and diversity organized under the German presidency of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, Barenboim recalled that Argentina hosts Christian, Jewish and Muslim Syrian communities and called on the country to strengthen its efforts of hosting refugees.

Barenboim, who also have Israeli, Spanish and Palestinian passports, extended his call to the rest of Latin America and noted that there are also large Syrian groups in Chile and Brazil.

He noted that mass migrations have ended homogeneous societies, but have also raised fears, so diversity and respect must be defended.
