SAN JUAN – The official death toll from Hurricane Maria has risen from 39 to 43 in Puerto Rico, officials said Tuesday.
All the deaths happened after the powerful storm moved away from the island, government spokesman Ramon Rosario said.
Regarding the restoration of electric service, Rosario said only 16 percent of Electric Energy Authority (AEE) customers have power.
One of the fatalities was a man in the northwestern city of Aguadilla who had an infection and could not have surgery in time to save his life because operations had been suspended.
Another person died in the southwestern city of Lajas when he fell from a roof, while a driver died in the northwestern city of Moca when he failed to avoid a mudslide.
A man lost his life in the southwestern town of San German while doing clean-up work.
