SANTO DOMINGO – Msgr. Francisco Ozoria Acosta was installed as the Dominican capital’s new archbishop in a canonical possession rites ceremony on Saturday, replacing Cardinal Nicolas de Jesus Lopez Rodriguez.
Hundreds of civilian and military representatives, including President Danilo Medina, attended the ceremony presided over by the papal nuncio to the Dominican Republic, Msgr. Jude Thaddeus Okolo.
Pope Francis’ representative invited Ozoria Acosta to sit on the cathedra, or archbishop’s throne, to symbolize his accession to the leadership of the archdiocese.
In his first words as archbishop, Ozoria Acosta gave “thanks to God for his immense love and abundant mercy” and expressed appreciation for the support and solidarity of the Dominican Bishops’ Conference.
Just as he said upon being named archbishop, he termed the appointment “a great surprise” that he was assuming with all the challenges it entails.
