SAN JUAN – Four days ahead of Puerto Rico’s presidential primary, Gov. Alejandro Garcia Padilla on Wednesday endorsed Hillary Clinton for the Democratic nomination.
“I express my full support for a candidate who has extensive experience in her political career, but beyond that, a candidate who knows Puerto Rico,” the governor said in a written statement.
The former secretary of state said that Clinton has “always” shown interest in Puerto Rico and the welfare of its population, Garcia Padilla said.
He pointed to Clinton’s support for boosting Medicare and Medicaid funding to Puerto Rico, among other proposals.
Garcia Padilla’s endorsement of Clinton came hours after the campaign of her rival, Sen. Bernie Sanders, touted support from three past leaders of the governor’s PPD party, including former Gov. Anibal Acevedo Vila.
