Cuban Medical Mission Arrives in Jamaica

SAN JUAN – Twenty Cuban health workers have arrived in Kingston on a mission to help strengthen primary health and dental care, the government of Jamaica said Wednesday.

The mission, comprising nine doctors, 10 dentists and a biomedical engineer, is in Jamaica under a bilateral cooperation agreement, the Jamaican Health Ministry said in a statement.

“Jamaica and Cuba have always enjoyed excellent relations over the years and as we work to strengthen our primary health care system in Jamaica we welcome all 20 medical professionals to our island,” Health Permanent Secretary Kevin Harvey said.

The mission is expected to boost health capacities in “several critical areas” and the Cuban professionals will be assigned to regional health authorities.
