Bahamian Authorities Detain 13 Haitian Migrants

SAN JUAN Bahamian authorities detained 13 undocumented Haitian immigrants who were intercepted while traveling in a white van, police said Monday in a statement.

The driver of the vehicle was arrested and taken into custody while the 13 immigrants were detained.

Under a revised immigration law that took effect in November 2014, the Bahamian government will not accept applications for work permits from persons residing illegally in the country, while legal immigrants must carry their passports at all times.

The legislation has been criticized internationally as targeting Haitians, a charge the Bahamian government denies.
