SAN JUAN – St. Lucian people commemorated on Monday the 37th anniversary of their independence from Britain with a parade in capital city Castries and the conferral of the nation’s first knighthoods.
The government said in a statement this marks the first time the country awards the title of Knight Commander or Dame Commander following last year’s amendment of the National Honors and Awards Act.
Derek Walcott, Vaughan Allen Lewis and Lawrence Martha Priscilla Laurent were the three citizens recognized Monday.
“Her Majesty the Queen (Elizabeth II) has graciously agreed that Saint Lucia may proceed to award its own Knighthoods,” according to the statement. “These awards to do not replace the knighthood conferred by Her Majesty every five years in honor of Her birthday, or the New Year Honors, as the case may be.”
