Belize to Build 35 New Schools with Loan from Regional Bank

SAN JUAN – The government of Belize, with a loan from the Caribbean Development Bank, will build 35 new schools with the goal of increasing enrollment in primary and secondary education, the Caribbean Community said Friday in a statement.

The CDB has extended a $35 million loan to the Belizean government, which will provide an additional $8.7 million to complete construction.

The schools are expected to serve 5,300 students at the pre-primary, primary and secondary levels.

This initiative is part of Belize’s Education Sector Reform Program, which aims to providing children nationwide with “equitable access to a quality basic education” and likewise aligns with the CDB’s strategic objective of supporting sustainable growth.

Some of the project funds will be devoted to outfitting each school with furniture, equipment and technology to enhance the learning environment.

Founded in 1970, the Caribbean Development Bank includes Anguilla; Antigua and Barbuda; Barbados; Belize; the British Virgin Islands; the Cayman Islands; Dominica; Grenada; Guyana; Haiti; Jamaica; Montserrat; St. Kitts and Nevis; St. Lucia; St. Vincent and the Grenadines; Suriname; the Bahamas; Trinidad and Tobago; and the Turks and Caicos Islands.
