Chinese Company Delays Construction of Timber Plant in Guyana

SAN JUAN – China’s Bai Shan Lin has delayed construction of a timber-processing plant in Region 10, south of Georgetown, due to lack of funds, a Guyanese official confirmed to EFE on Friday.

Bai Shan Lin executives told Governance Minister Raphael Trotman that the project, valued at more than $100 million, is “on pause” because the time needed to acquire some of the equipment has been extended from 10 months to two years.

“I am led to believe that the company is in the process of restructuring and when this is over, under the guidance of the Chinese government or state, then it will re-engage with government,” Trotman said.

Bai Shan Lin established itself in Guyana in 2005 and manages forests, a gold-mining concession and 400 acres of land for real estate development.
