MEXICO CITY – Three police officers were murdered this weekend in the resort city of La Paz, the capital of the northwestern Mexican state of Baja California Sur, prosecutors said.
The bodies of the officers, who belonged to a special force that patrols tourist areas, were found Saturday by state police inside a vehicle in La Paz’s Centro district, the Baja California Sur Attorney General’s Office said.
“The remains were identified as those of Tourism Police officers,” the AG’s office said.
Baja California Sur has been dealing with a wave of violence unleashed by drug cartels apparently involved in a turf war.
Last month, Baja California Sur Human Rights Commission president Silvestre de la Toba was gunned down in an attack that also left his son, Fernando, dead.
De la Toba’s wife and daughter were seriously wounded in the attack.
