MEXICO – An explosion inside a vehicle carrying pyrotechnics without the necessary security measures left one person dead and nine injured in the municipality of Acambay in the central State of Mexico, the state government reported.
The material was inside a van as it drove through the community of Cerrito de Tixmadeje during a pilgrimage to mark the anniversary of the Santisimo of Barrio de Guadalupe, the government said in a bulletin.
The nine wounded were taken to various hospitals in the region, and four of them had to be transferred by air. The man who lost his life was 52 years old.
The state government said that it was monitoring the situation to see if there are more people injured.
This is the most recent accident of its kind to occur in Mexico.
On June 13, an explosion in a warehouse containing pyrotechnic devices in the municipality of Zumpango, State of Mexico, left at least two people injured.
That explosion followed a previous accident in early May, when 14 people died in a pyrotechnics warehouse explosion in Chilchotla, in the central state of Puebla.
Also, a series of explosions in a fireworks market in Tultepec, State of Mexico, left 42 people dead in December 2016.
