MEXICO CITY – An Italian who faces more than five years behind bars in his homeland for drug trafficking was apprehended in the Caribbean resort city of Playa del Carmen, the Mexican Attorney General’s Office said on Friday.
Ivan Fornari, 34, was caught thanks to collaboration between Mexican and Italian authorities, the AG Office said in a statement.
The fugitive, who entered Mexico last October on a tourist visa, was sentenced in Italy to five years and seven months in prison after a conviction for smuggling large quantities of marijuana into the country.
Fornari was handed over to Italian authorities, according to the statement.
Last week, the AG Office announced the arrest of another Italian fugitive, 64-year-old Giulio Perrone, reputed to be a high-level member of the Camorra, a criminal organization based in Naples.
Perrone, who had been on Italy’s Ten Most Wanted list for more than a decade, was turned over to Italian police.
