Death Toll in Ecuador Bus Crash Climbs to 29

QUITO – The death toll from a weekend bus crash in the northern Ecuadorian province of Imbabura rose to 29, a fire rescue service official from the Andean city of Ibarra told Efe.

In the accident that happened when a bus hit a wall, skidded off the road and fell down a cliff, another 28 people were injured.

Among the dead and injured were salesmen, tourists and members of a Jehovah’s Witnesses congregation, the daily El Universo said.

The accident occurred on the Ibarra-San Lorenzo highway, which connects the provinces of Imbabura and Esmeraldas, the latter on the border with Colombia.

The injured were taken to medical centers near the scene of the accident and in Quito. EFE
