QUITO – The number of people who have died in Ecuador after drinking homemade liquor containing methanol has risen to 33, the Public Health Ministry reported Tuesday.
The most recent deaths occurred in the central highland province of Tungurahua, the ministry said in a communique.
The deaths from the adulterated liquor began occurring on July 14.
At first, the focal point of the deaths was the southwestern province of Los Rios, where 20 people died, but little by little other fatalities were registered throughout the country.
At present, poisoning cases have been reported in 15 of Ecuador’s 24 provinces. EFE
