QUITO – Ecuadorian police and soldiers confiscated 1.5 tons of cocaine in an area near the border with neighboring Colombia, authorities said Friday.
The operation effectively dismantled a criminal organization engaged in international drug trafficking, the provincial police commander in Esmeraldas, Pablo Santos, told reporters.
Besides seizing the cocaine, security forces arrested five people during the raid in the Borbon district of Esmeraldas.
Though not a drug-producing nation, Ecuador is bordered by the world’s top two sources of cocaine, Colombia and Peru, and is used by cartels as a transit corridor and staging area. EFE
