30 Dead in Ecuador Bus Crash

QUITO – Some 30 people were killed and 25 others injured when a bus ran off the road and plunged into a ravine in the coastal province of Manabi, Ecuador’s National Police said Friday.

The bus was plying a regular route between the cities of Flavio Alfaro-El Carmen at the time of the accident, a police spokesperson told Efe.

Media accounts put the number of fatalities at 32, including eight children and the bus driver.

The injured were taken to a nearby hospital as first responders continued to search for more survivors, police said.

The accident was apparently caused by the simultaneous failure of the bus’ brakes and transmission, one survivor told El Telegrafo newspaper.

He said the driver tried to compensate, but lost control of the vehicle, which ran off the road and plunged some 200 meters (655 feet), striking a tree and a boulder on the way down. EFE
