QUITO – Unidentified persons detonated two explosives outside a prison wall in Ecuador’s largest city but failed to free any inmates, the press said Monday.
Two guards were injured, one by shrapnel in the face and the other by a fragment that hit his head, while three inmates at La Roca Prison in Guayaquil were also hurt.
The prisoners were in the courtyard Sunday night when the blast occurred. National Police preferred not to comment on the incident to Efe.
Amid the chaos sparked by the explosion and with family members rushing to the penitentiary seeking explanations, the police took more than four hours to control the situation, the press said. EFE
