BARCELONA – Around 50 animal rights activists protested against the fur industry in Barcelona on Sunday by stripping off and dousing their bodies in fake blood to evoke images of discarded carcasses.
The “Sin Piel” (Without Skin) demonstration, organized by Anima Naturalis, an NGO, took place in downtown Barcelona, in Spain’s northeastern Catalonia region.
During the protest, activists sprawled out in a pile in Plaza de Catalunya square and held a sign daubed with the slogan: “How many lives for a coat?”
Some 32 million animals are slaughtered for the fur industry in the European Union every year, according to Anima Naturalis.
“The use of fur garments has been wrongly associated with luxury and fashion, and this is the kind of thinking that has to be changed because if we do not demand it, there will be no reason to supply it,” said Anima Naturalis’ Barcelona coordinator, Cristina Ibañez.
“There are many alternative ways of dressing that don’t require to take the skin and the life of an animal,” she added.
