BEIJING – A toxic gas leak caused the explosion that left 23 dead and 22 injured this week in the northern Chinese city of Zhangjiakou, state news agency Xinhua reported on Friday.
Preliminary investigations had pointed to a leak in a truck carrying toxic goods that was waiting to enter the premises of the Hebei Shenghua Chemical Industry Co.
Local authorities quoted by Xinhua Friday said at a press conference that the blast occurred after “vinyl chloride leaked from the gas holder and spread to the road” outside the chemical factory.
The explosion occurred at 12:41 am Wednesday and 38 trucks and 12 vehicles that were on that road caught fire.
Four of the 22 injured have been discharged from hospital, while the rest are in stable condition.
