Activists Protest Outside Spanish Bank Headquarters over Pipeline Financing

MADRID – A group of Greenpeace activists staged a protest outside the headquarters of a Spanish bank on Wednesday over the financing of oil pipelines that pose a threat to the natural environment in North America.

Protesters erected mock piping with banners attached to it reading “No more money for dangerous oil pipelines” and “BBVA destroys the planet.”

“BBVA is financing companies linked to a dangerous oil project that is putting oceans, biodiversity and the way of life of indigenous people in Canada at risk,” the environmentalist organization said on its site.

Greenpeace named 11 other international banks it said were also involved in financing huge pipelines in the United States and Canada.

The pipelines were endangering water quality, biodiversity and the rights of indigenous peoples, as well as boosting the threat of climate change and leading to the destruction of forests, according to Greenpeace.
