Search Continues for Miners Trapped after Earthquake Hit Poland

WARSAW Rescue teams were still searching on Monday for three miners who have spent days trapped underground after an earthquake hit southern Poland, causing the tunnel they were working in to collapse.

A temblor at a coal mine in Jastrzebie-Zdroj killed on Saturday two workers and saw another five trapped some 900 meters (2,952 feet) underground, two of which were pulled out alive, though they remain in critical condition.

JSW, the company that runs the mine, said on Monday that rescue efforts were complicated as pockets of methane gas and high temperatures made access to the trapped miners difficult.

Some 250 people were working at the mine at the time of the quake, though most of them were able to escape through the emergency exits.
