HAVANA – Juana Bautista de la Candelaria Rodriguez turned 125 years old on Tuesday and is “presumably” the oldest person on the planet, “although that has not been acknowledged,” Cuba’s official media said Tuesday.
Known as Candulia by those close to her, she is not in the Guinness World Records though she was born on Feb. 2, 1885 in Campechuela, a village in the eastern province of Granma, where she still lives, according to the official AIN news agency.
The agency added that her date of birth is confirmed in a Civil Registry document of that village, where she was registered 25 days after she was born by her mother, Cecilia Rodriguez.
Candulia, who was the second of 13 children, said that she is in good health and is very happy, and that she hopes to celebrate many more years with her six grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
She attributes her longevity to the pure air of the countryside, a diet rich in meat and a “heart that has always been full of love,” AIN said. EFE
