NEW YORK – Spanish series “La Casa de Papel” (Money Heist) took home on Monday the coveted Best Drama award at the 46th annual International Emmy Awards.
The original series produced by Atresmedia has become the most successful non-English Netflix production after the honor at the International Emmys, held in New York.
The International Emmys recognize the best television work outside the United States.
Series creator Alex Pina expressed his excitement at receiving the international recognition for a project that he described as pure entertainment.
Danish star Lars Mikkelsen won the Best Performance by an Actor award for “Herrens Veje” (Ride Upon the Storm) for his character of a man who faces the opportunity to become the first priest in his family.
The Best Performance by an Actress award went to Germany’s Anna Schudt for “Ein Schnupfen hätte auch gereicht” (The Sniffles Would Have Been Just Fine) which tells the story of how comedian Gaby Koster returned to stage to accept a prize for her artistic career after suffering a stroke and being in a coma.
The TV Movie/Mini-Series Emmy went to the British production, “Man in an Orange Shirt,” a love story focusing on two gay couples – one 40 years ago and another based in present times – who are affected by their circumstances.
The Emmy for Comedy went to Israel’s “Nevsu” while the best Telenovela Emmy went to Portugal’s “Ouro Verde” (The Payback).
The Mexican “El Vato” was judged best Non-English Language U.S. Primetime Program.
