BRUSSELS – As “The Smurfs,” the tiny blue cartoon characters beloved by generations, reach their 60th birthday this year, their home country Belgium is marking the occasion with a special exhibition.
“The Smurf Experience” will give visitors an interactive experience, allowing them to explore the world of these small creatures who live in mushroom houses.
“In 2018, The Smurfs will celebrate their 60th birthday and will build their village at Brussels Expo from June 9!” the organizers said on the event’s website.
The brainchild of Belgian cartoonist Peyo, The Smurfs were first introduced in 1958 as comic book characters called “The Schtroumpfs.”
These miniature, human-like characters later graced the small screen and became the protagonists of theme parks and video games.
Fans of Papa Smurf and the rest of his Smurf colony or the evil wizard Gargamel will be able to visit The Smurf Experience from June 9 to Sept. 2.
