LOS ANGELES – The actor Harry Dreyfuss, son of actor Richard Dreyfuss, accused Kevin Spacey of having groped him when he was age 18 in front to his dad, who failed to notice what was happening.
The young man, now 27, said in a letter posted on the Buzzfeed News Web site – which was the first to shed light on Spacey’s alleged abuse – that he went during the 2008 Christmas holidays to visit his father in London, where he was appearing in the play “Complicit” at the Old Vic Theater directed by Spacey.
One night he went with his father to Spacey’s apartment where the director was to help the elder Dreyfuss learn his lines.
There the star of “American Beauty” sat next to him on a sofa and put his hand on his thigh. The youth got up and sat somewhere else, but Spacey followed him and repeated the maneuver, putting his hand on Harry’s crotch and fondling him.
“My mind went blank,” Harry said. “Looking into his eyes, I gave the most meager shake of my head that I could manage. I was trying to warn him without alerting my dad.”
Richard Dreyfuss was in the same room but with his “eyes glued to the page,” and Harry told Buzzfeed it wasn’t until years later that he let him know what was going on.
“I thought I was protecting everyone. I was protecting my dad’s career. I was protecting Kevin, who my dad surely would have tried to punch. I was protecting myself, because I thought one day I’d want to work with this man. Kevin had no reaction and kept his hand there. My eyes went back to the script and I kept reading,” Harry said.
It took the youth four or five years to tell his father what had occurred.
“He was furious,” the young man said, “and I spent the rest of the evening ensuring him that it wasn’t a big deal, and that I would be mortified if he did anything about it.”
